Invitation for Applications: Head of Music Cataloging

Description: This full-time position works closely with and reports to the Music Librarian, is a member of the management team, and manages the technical services area of the Music Library. This person manages a team of 3 full-time paraprofessional members and is responsible for original cataloging of materials in a variety of languages/formats using OCLC, LC, and a modified NOTIS system. Central to this position is the setting of cataloging priorities, policies, and standards in a team environment; serving as principal cataloger for all music materials/resources; monitoring/analyzing/ documenting workflow/policies/procedures; managing retrospective maintenance of database; monitoring/revising the work of paraprofessionals; and providing training for other members of the staff.

Qualifications: Preferred: ALA-accredited MLS; masters degree in music; 3 years post-MLS music cataloging experience at professional level in an academic library; knowledge of non-print cataloging tools; excellent organization/communication skills; ability to work collegially in team environment; foreign languages; supervisory skills.

Salary & Benefits: $ 30,000 - $ 32,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Institutional Setting: The Florida State University is a comprehensive research institution of 16 colleges and schools with 1,500 faculty and 35,000 students. The University is situated in Tallahassee, Florida’s wooded capital city, with an area population of over 225,000. Tallahassee is located in the “Big Bend” area of northern Florida, with close proximity to the Gulf, and a mild change of seasons.

The Music Library, a major music library in the southeast, is completing a three-year program to enhance its collections and services. The Music Library is currently administered by the School of Music, with a staff of 2 librarians, 5 paraprofessionals, 6 FTE student assistants, and has its own technical and public service units. The Florida State University Libraries are members of ARL and CRL, and participates in the Florida Library Research Consortium [collections] program.
