Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Do music applicants have to apply to both the School of Music and the University?
Answer: Yes.
FSU Application for Admission - All music applicants are required to submit an application for admission to FSU, as well as all supporting documents required by the University (e.g. academic transcripts, standardized test scores, etc.). Applicants are urged to contact the FSU Office of Admissions or visit the FSU Admissions website for specific information regarding University admission requirements.
FSU School of Music Supplementary Application - Applicants to all degree and certificate programs in music must submit the completed School of Music Supplemental Application directly to the FSU School of Music Office of Admissions. Although applicants are encouraged to do so as early as possible, deadlines for filing the supplementary application will coincide with the FSU application deadlines for freshman, transfer and graduate admission.

Question: Do I need to wait to be admitted to the University before I can submit my application to the School of Music?
Answer: No. Please do not wait.

Question: Do I have to audition? I’m applying for a non-performance degree.
Answer: All undergraduate applicants must audition successfully in order to be considered for admission and merit-based financial aid. Graduate applicants for a non-performance degree are encouraged to audition. A non-performance graduate applicant may choose not to audition, in which case she/he is required to take at least two full semesters of principal-level graduate voice study in lieu of an audition. This study will begin in the first semester of residence.

Question: What is a Statement of Objectives & Resume?
Answer: If this is required by your degree program, applicants are should prepare a brief statement of their professional goals, as well as their purpose in applying for the particular program. Applicants are also encouraged to prepare a resume, detailing professional and academic experience.

Question: What is a Repertoire List and will I be asked to perform anything on the list at my audition?
Answer: A Repertoire List is simply a listing of significant solo literature you have studied or performed in the past. You will not be asked to perform any of these works at your audition. You will only be asked to perform what you have selected to perform at your audition. Applicants to degree and certificate programs in performance are encouraged to prepare a detailed list of the repertoire they have studied.

Question: What is a Writing Sample?
Answer: Applicants to some graduate level programs are required to submit samples of academic and analytical writing.

Question: Letters of Recommendation
Answer: Undergraduate applicants are required to submit at least one letter. Graduate applicants are required to submit at least three letters. These letters should be from persons familiar with your academic and professional background.

Question: Do I need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)?
Answer: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is NOT required for admission unless you are applying for the MA – Arts Administration and/or if your GPA for upper-division undergraduate coursework is 3.0 or higher. IF YOUR GPA IS BELOW 3.0, YOU MUST FURNISH A GRE SCORE OF AT LEAST 1000 (VERBAL + QUANTITATIVE).
If you wish to be considered for a University Fellowship and you are applying for a non-performance degree, then YOU MUST SUBMIT A GRE SCORE. A combined verbal/quantitative score of 1350 is generally required to receive these Fellowships. Please call the Graduate Music Office (850 644-5848) for details (Fellowship applications are due by January 9, and your file MUST be complete, including audition for performance majors, prior to January 24).
