Upon admission to the program, the student will take an examination admisnistered by the opera faculty to determine the best course of study during residence at FSU. NOTE: Identified language deficiencies will have to be remidied during the period of residence at a credit level not applicable to the total graduate credit hour requirement of the certificate itself.

Students admitted into the Artist Certificate program in Opera Performance will perform a screening examination at the end of the first semester in residence. No student will be considered fully admitted into the Artist Certificate program until this examination has been passed, and under no circumstances will a student be permitted to continue in the program beyond one semester without successful completion of that requirement. The examination performance will be judged by the opera faculty (music director and stage director), the coordinator of voice, and the student's applied voice teacher and will consist of the following:

  • Three arias (new repertoire from audition) in three different languages covering a variety of styles;
  • A secco recitative from standard 17th and 18th centry opera repertoire;
  • A duet assigned by the opera faculty.
