Music Theory & Composition
welcome   |   degree programs   |   music theory society   |   resources

The Florida State University School of Music features one of the largest and most distinguished theory and composition faculties in the United States. Our students gain valuable experience as teachers and researchers, working with faculy members who care deeply about both pursuits.

Congratulations
  • to Scott Baker, our newest Ph.D. graduate in music theory, who was just hired as Assistant Professor of Music Theory at The University of Southern Mississippi.
  • to music theory doctoral student Robert Kelley, who won the best student paper award at Music Theory Southeast, March 15, 2003.
  • to Professors Jane Clendinning, Clifton Callender, and Michael Buchler, who were invited to participate in the 2003 Mannes Institute on Transformational Theory and Analysis this June.

This past year was busy and exciting! Highlights include the following:

  • Distinguished scholars Robert Hatten (Indiana University, Bloomington) and Jonathan Bernard (University of Washington) each presented lectures as part of visiting residencies.
  • FSU's biennial Festival of New Music featured music by over 40 composers, including Pulizer Prize winner Shulamit Ran (University of Chicago). The many highlights included a performance by the Penderecki Quartet, featuring works by Ran, Penderecki, Ligeti, and FSU's own Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.
  • Our annual FSU Music Theory Forum featured keynote speaker James Buhler (University of Texas, Austin).
  • Our faculty and graduate students presented talks and chaired sessions at the Society for Music Theory, South-Central Music Theory Society, Music Theory Southeast, American Mathematical Society, and Music Theory Midwest.
  • We began teaching in the new Cawthon Music Living-Learning Center, a wonderful residential atmosphere for undergraduate music majors.
  • The new year also brought the long-awaited debut of the "Diminished Five," the theory and composition department basketball team. We played in the City of Tallahassee recreation league and, though we finished with a less-than-impressive 0-16 record, we had a wonderful time and improved dramatically. Team pictures!
  • See the news and events page for a more complete list theory/composition events.
